The Leading Youth of Tomorrow’s Mental Health Component is a vital component in ensuring participants address the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and families suffering from the destructive effects of early trauma and are at-risk of serious emotional disturbance. The primary goal of the Mental Health Component is to provide options for safe, nurturing, family-centered treatment interventions, with a therapeutic focus for youth. The treatment is particularly sensitive to the unique problems of youth with post-traumatic stress and mood disorders resulting from gun violence, physical abuse, community violence, or grief. Cognitive behavioral techniques are used to help modify distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviors. Trauma-focused therapy can address and improve the symptoms of post-traumatic stress in youth.
